Timeline of Project Activities

Activities marked with ** were included in the IMLS grant as activities supporting the Preservation of Electronic Government Information (PEGI) Project. Other activities further support and raise awareness for the project. Most of these activities were funded by the participant’s institution.


Preliminary Activities

May 2016: Digital Preservation of Federal Information Summit, San Antonio, Texas

Held in conjunction with the Coalition of Networked Information (CNI) spring meeting and facilitated by Dr. Katherine Skinner of the Educopia Institute, the Digital Preservation of Federal Information Summit brought together archivists, librarians, technologists, and others to engage in a structured dialogue on at-risk digital government information. It also aimed to explore the development of a national agenda to address the preservation of access to electronic government information.

December 2016: Preservation of Electronic Government Information (PEGI) Meeting, Washington, DC

Held in conjunction with the Coalition of Networked Information (CNI) fall meeting and facilitated by Michelle Gallinger of Gallinger Consulting, this meeting brought together a small group of librarians and archivists to discuss and scope a grant proposal to address concerns of at-risk electronic government information. At this meeting a core group committed to serve on the PEGI project team.

May 2017: Open Access Symposium, Frisco, TX

A moderated panel featuring Mark Phillips of the University of North Texas (UNT), David Walls of the Government Publishing Office (GPO), Margaret Janz from the University of Pennsylvania, and Shari Laster, then of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), explored current preservation activities and issues impacting work in this area.

May 2017: PEGI Field Work, Washington, DC

With funding from the University of North Texas (UNT), Roberta Sittel and Deborah Caldwell interviewed representatives within federal agencies to better understand publishing workflows, records scheduling and management with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and coordination with the Government Publishing Office (GPO) for wider distribution. Interviews were conducted with the Marine Mammal Commission, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Library of Congress, and the Government Publishing Office (GPO).


National Leadership Grant Project Activities

The first year of the project focused on gathering data and preparing for the educational awareness and advocacy outreach activities in the second year of the project. In addition to regular email correspondence and regular virtual working meetings, the PEGI Project Team met in the following months and locations during 2018. For the second year of the project, the PEGI Project received an IMLS National Leadership Grant (Click here for the PDF of the full text of the National Forums project description) to coordinate and host a series of national forums. Below is a list of activities outlined for the IMLS National Leadership Grant, in addition to these activities Project Team members will engage in a variety of outreach activities with relevant stakeholders and via professional meetings and conferences. 

2017

  • June 2017: Steering Committee Meeting (in conjunction with ALA Annual, Chicago, IL)

  • October 2017: Practice Mini-Forum at the Federal Depository Library Conference, Arlington, VA

  • October 2017: Digital Library Federation (DLF) Forum and National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Digital Preservation 2017, Pittsburgh, PA
